Alice In Chains

Despite having immense success in the early 90s (1990-1995, basically), I still think a lot of people hate, don’t know of, or don’t understand Alice In Chains. This is not some dumb-ass radio band. These guys are completely legit, with a sound completely all their own… that never really fit in with the Seattle grunge scene of the early 90s. If anything, AIC was the black sheep of the entire Seattle family.

I’m not a big metal or hard rock guy at all (I used to be when I was a kid, but not so much anymore), but god damn… seriously. Alice In Chains are just so fucking good. Jerry Cantrell (lead guitarist/harmony vocalist) has described their music as heavy metal, blues rock, even punk. I’d agree. They’re like the 90s version of Black Sabbath, if anything.

They’re still good, today (with the guy who replaced Layne Staley), but there’s something about the stuff they did with Layne…. all night… I’ve been non-stop listening to the debut album Facelift (1990) and the quadruple-platinum-selling Dirt (1992)… it was a rough night. Past few months have been rough off and on, and I needed a band to calm me the fuck down. This is the band.

Keep an open mind… and dig in. Here’s a Spotify playlist for ye.

  1. I love AIC. I’m 39 years old, and wasn’t a huge “grunge” guy but AIC was pure metal.

I think what you’re trying to say is something that a lot of people have also have a hard time saying: Layne’s vocals came out of a pain that would either be treated or end in a suicide.

Gerry Cantrell is still a hell of a musician, and new AIC is pretty awesome.
