The Hush Sound
I just saw The Hush Sound live last night at the TLA in Philly. A friend of mine mentioned she was going, earlier this week. I had no idea they even reformed and were touring. So I had to take advantage of it, and bought a couple tickets. My friend and I went, and man, I’m so glad I did.
As I tell everyone when I’m on the subject… The Hush Sound are so fucking talented musically, it hurts to listen to them sometimes. The melodic brilliance in the songwriting, the fantastic, poetic, and honest lyrics, the musicianship between ALL members (not just vocally, as ALL members sing)… man. It’s just crazy. And keep in mind – they are young. Their first album was released when Greta (pianist/dual lead singer) was only 17. And that was seven short years ago. The oldest member of the band is Bob Morris, and he is only 27. Immense talent for a band so young.
Their songs are perfectly filled out and arranged. Filling space where it is needed, and leaving space where it needs it. I would describe their music as extremely catchy indie rock, with a showtunes or Broadway twist. It’s that fucking good, and that unique. And no matter what, it’s filled with hooks.. you cannot get these songs out of your head no matter how hard you try.
Greta is one hell of a lead singer AND pianist (and my god, is she gorgeous)… and Bob of course just kills… KILLS… on guitar, and lead vocals (they trade off singing lead depending on the song), and there are constant vocal harmonies and countermelodies/backing vocals provided by all members of the band.
They were so funny live, too. The banter between songs…. I was laughing out loud. That doesn’t happen often at concerts as many musicians just don’t know how to have a good time, live. Not this band.
Oh, and one final note: they did an Elvis Costello cover in the encore (“(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?”)… what a great choice. Pure class.
I will not babble any more about them… let the perfect music speak for itself:
